The second time I went to Mexico I noticed that the ladies I stayed with would often add the diminutive -ita or -ito to nouns. I would be asked if I wanted a manzanita... (a "little apple" not that the apple was small, more like it was rather precious -- as if I, as a guest, was someone upon whom to bestow a gift).
